For many job seekers, a union grocery job is one of the best-kept secrets in Seattle-King County's labor market—stable hours, real benefits, and a clear ladder up to skilled, well-paying roles like meatcutter and fishmonger. But without industry connections or a formal credential, getting a foot in the door has often been the hardest part. 

Since Sound Jobs launched in 2025, the team has hosted two career fairs built specifically around the Seattle and King County hospitality industry. These events weren’t general job fairs where hospitality happens to be one booth among many. They were focused event designed around the people and employers who make this region's hotels, restaurants, and grocery stores run. The results have made a case that this industry-specific intentional design matters.

The WDC has launched Sound Jobs, a new initiative dedicated to strengthening economic mobility and worker well-being in the hospitality sector, backed by a $3 million Critical Sectors Job Quality Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. This investment supports a coalition of labor unions, workforce organizations, and employers to enhance workplace practices and career pathways for hospitality workers across the region.
