Life Sciences Skill Panel
The life sciences skill panel team came together as a result of a partnership with the Puget Sound Regional Council, Prosperity Partnership, and the WBBA--all of whom were the initial leaders in this endeavor. The WDC thanks them as well as Bellevue Community College, Seattle Biotechnical Research Institute, Shoreline Community College, the medical lab technology staff at Harborview Medical Center, Ockham Development Group, and the Washington State Labor Council for the hard work that was put into receiving this award. The WDC is pleased to have Terry Sweeney from Philips Medical Systems as the panel chair.
The life sciences skill panel is comprised of 30 leaders in education, private industry, associations, outreach programs, economic and workforce development councils and local government. The opportunity to convene was provided by a grant from the state workforce board. The focus of this panel is to develop a strategic plan for workforce training and education in the Puget Sound region and to target specific short term and long term goals to be accomplished in the next several years. This panel's mission is both exciting and vital to our economy and workers. There is a great potential for industries to flourish in Washington State (e.g. bioinformantics, research & development, and bio medical devices). This team of expert leaders gathers to address industry needs and develop a plan that results in rewarding, good paying jobs for current and future workers in life sciences.

Industry-Education Council
The life sciences skill panel had a very successful year of convening and developing recommendations. Two of its most important final products was the creation of the LS-central.com web site, which features Washington state education programs and high demand jobs in the life sciences and panel recommendations which can be viewed in "The Future of Life Sciences Report" published by the WBBA.
Another important outcome of the life sciences skill panel was the creation of the life sciences industry-education council. The panel recommended that a statewide group of business and education leaders convene as the panel has, to discuss short and long term solutions to training and education in this industry.
For further information regarding the industry-education council, please contact Helena Haas at the WDC or Olivia Toy at the WBBA.
The WBBA will be facilitating the industry-education council meetings with assistance from the WDC staff.
Meetings will be held across the state on the following dates:
- February 1, 2007
- May 2, 2007
- August 1, 2007
- November 7, 2007
